Ideological skewing in the proverbs' translation

With basic improvements in the translation studies, undoubtedly a new paradigm has been formed in the field of translation studies. This new paradigm which has been sometimes called "ideological skewing"(Khan jan,2015) can respond to translation needs at a broader domain which can systematically analyze the textual features and considers other textual-contextual features. Therefore, today in any translation quality assessment, it seems that some fundamental adjustments between the previous models which follow text-based approaches and the new models that follow the more context-based approaches needs to be made. In this way, the results obtained from such a process corresponds to the new trends in translation studies especially in the domain of translation quality assessment, where ideological skewing can be considered as an example of such paradigm shifts. This research following such a view and considering proverbs as the main dominion of the ideological features, analyzes the quality of the translations in" The Dictionary of English Proverbs "by Ghanbari(2007) as the study corpus, which has been regarded as a successful literary translation in Iran. Most of the assessments so far made on the work have sake to analyze whether the translation is source text-oriented or target text-oriented. However, since in any translation, there are also some cultural or social factors involved which are as influential as the source text, the competent translator, etc. , this article assesses the translations of the most popular English and Persian social proverbs in "The Dictionary of English Proverbs", considering the respective elements and equivalents in the different levels. Thus, through finding and then analyzing the dominant ideological features of different proverbs in the ST and TT which was done through shedding more light on the different definitions of ideology by some different theorists who have mainly been translation theorists, the required data of the study has been categorized through the textual and comparative analysis of the ST and TT.Thus, the study has sake to shed more light not only on the proverbial concepts underlying them but also on the quality of the ideological skewing involved in the process of proverbs' translation. Finally, findings of the study revealed that in different societies and cultures, in this case English and Persian, different ideological features are reflected in proverbs as one instance of peoples' speech due to differences between their beliefs, worldviews, life experiences, etc.

The study of Chesterman’s models of translation ethics: A case study of the Persian translation of the sound and the fury

According to Baker (2011), ethics plays an important role within the translation profession and the knowledge of ethical standards is essential to good practice, developing the profession and maintaining positive opinions and perceptions. This study offered an overview of a compilation of rules and directives that translators must follow while performing their duties. The present paper was an attempt to apply comparative analysis to the novel of “ the Sound and the Fury” by William Faulkner along with its Persian translation by Hosseini. The models of translation ethics proposed by Chesterman(2001) were used as the framework. Then, the models were investigated in the context by using the examples extracted from the corpus. It was also found what model of translation ethics was the most frequent, and the influence of professional and personal ethics in the translator’s work was examined. It was concluded that the most frequent model of translation ethics was ethics of communication and the research questions of the study were answered.

An investigation on the effect of teaching interpretation skills in tourism field

This study aims at investigating the Effect of Teaching Interpretation Skills in Tourism Field in order to 1) find to what extent holding Interpretation course will influence general interpretation skills of translation students 2) To find to what extent holding Specialized Interpretation Course in Tourism field will influence translation students’ performance. To achieve these objectives three major steps were taken 1) Holding a course for teaching general skills of interpretation using practicing interpretation by Masoud Shrififar and Sima Ferdowsi 2) Holding a course for introducing the concepts and terminology of tourism field using English for international tourism by Peter Strutt 3) Holding a specialized interpretation course in tourism field. A pre-test is taken from all translation students to evaluate their knowledge and operation method at the beginning and one post-test at the end of holding the interpretation course and one at the end of the last course. The Terms of participating at this research is passing at least 30 basic units by translation students. The findings of the study indicated that there is %28 growth in the performance of the participants before the course and after the end of the course.

Using illocutionary force types as tools for explicitation in translation

The current qualitative study was carried out to investigate the illocutionary force of "Ya Ali" (a deeply culture specific term literally meaning Oh Ali) which is employed by Iranians in oral discourse. This research also aimed at finding out different functions of "Ya Ali" in different contexts and finding their corresponding equivalents in English according to Neubert's text-linguistic model. Data were collected in two phases: First, sixty Persian native speakers of different age groups ranging from 30 to 70, of both genders were observed in 90 natural situations such as daily interactions, gatherings, in public or private places as well as on local TV programs. Second, to corroborate the representativeness of samples, fifteen people were interviewed directly when they utter "Ya Ali" (i.e. think- aloud protocol was used). It was concluded that "Ya Ali" may be employed in either religious or non-religious contexts. Moreover, functions of "Ya Ali" can be used in eight different contexts with different functions. According to Neubert (1991) the translator must modify the source text using a variety of methods, including explicitation, deletion, and modulation in order to produce a more satisfactory and pragmatically adequate translation. The result revealed that explicitation was the most appropriate method for transferring the different meanings of "Ya Ali" from Persian into English.

Translating onomatopoeia: An attempt toward translation strategies

Peculiar characteristics of onomatopoeia as a type of word often cause challenges for learners, trainers, and translators of any language. The present study aimed to investigate translation of onomatopoeias in order to present applicable strategies for the translation process. To achieve objectives of the study, related works of other researchers and a case study including a Persian literary work i.e. the first book of the Masnavi by Mowlana Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi (1993), also known as Rumi, and its English translation by Jawid Mojaddedi (2004) were used. On the basis of the previous works and the case study, five strategies for dealing with onomatopoeia were presented: (a) translation using another type of word other than onomatopoeia (‎non onomatopoeic word), (b) translation using onomatopoeia, (c) translation using paraphrases, (d) no translation (omission), and (e) translation using loan word with or without explanation. The findings indicated that the linguistic system, type of onomatopoeia, availability and frequency of use in languages, semantic field, and translator involved in the process, style, text type, priority of content over form or vice versa, translation norms, and culture are key factors which influence choice of a strategy for dealing with onomatopoeia.

Applicability of Lefevere’s strategies in poetry translation regarding socio-cultural variations

A literary work has its own stylistic and formal beauties, as well as its potential meaning and semantic richness. Literary texts may refer to the concepts, objects, as well as social and cultural organizations that may not exist in the target text. Since every language has different syntactic structure, the semantic domain of the words in source and target language do not always overlap. In literary translation, the process of constant reinterpretation is quite obvious. This is especially clear in poetry where form expresses sense, and phonemic similarity is sensed as semantic relationship. That’s why it is considered untranslatable by some scholars such as Jacobson and it is said that it requires creative transposition. In this paper, literary texts, especially poetry, will be defined, some main principles as well as problems in literary translation will be introduced, and some procedures for poetry translation along with Lefevere’s translation strategies will be elaborated. At the end it concludes that an important feature of poetic discourse is to allow a multiplicity of responses among the readers and not to reduce the dynamic role of them. This can be done by giving priority to dynamic equivalence over formal equivalence and paying attention to the socio-cultural variations. However, Lefevere's strategies don't pay enough attention to the cultural discrepancies in translation of poem where form and meaning are bounded.
